Africa’s First Parrot Museum Opens Near Uganda’s Kibale National Park
BIGODI, UGANDA — July 17, 2025 — A new community-run museum on the edge of Kibale National Park has opened its doors, becoming the first institution in Africa dedicated solely to parrots. The Grey Parrot Museum, located in the biodiversity-rich town of Bigodi, showcases the biology, history, and conservation of African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus), one of the world’s most intelligent and threatened bird species.
In this museum, you will be greeted by several feathers, sounds and videos that will transport you to the lush habitats of these incredible birds in the wild. You will learn about their habitats, behaviours and conservation status.
Colorful, bilingual displays in English and Rutooro guide you through five themed sections: Introduction, Endangerment, Grey Parrots, History, and Local Conservation. Exhibits explore the species’ natural history, the threats they face, and the innovative grassroots efforts emerging from Bigodi to protect them.
Opening Hours:
- Monday–Saturday: 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Sunday: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM
- Open by appointment outside regular hours
